Cost

Dogs cost a lot of money. If you're lacking in your finances you might want to hold off on getting a dog.

Some examples of costs assuming your dog lives until 10 years old:
  • Yearly checkups $5,000
  • Spay or neutering $500
  • Food $10 per week = $5,000
  • Doggie hotels $50 per night, 10 days per year = $5,000
  • Walker $10 per 1/2 hour
  • Toys
  • Treats
  • Cost of dog $200 - $2,000
  • Collar
  • Leash
  • Training
Some of the costs are hidden. If you work and need to have someone take out the dog and say the cost is $10 per day. Then 5 work days is $50. Assuming 50 weeks per year is $2,500 per year. If the dog lives for 10 years that's $25,000 and if you're in a 50% tax bracket you have to earn $50,000 over the life of the dog.
