What's more important than time? Maybe happiness?

Life goes by in the blink of an eye. Time is so valuable that people who are dying would pay all sorts of money for an extra day, month, or year. Time is limited and you never know how much you have left. Once it's gone you can't get it back.

What if you could get more time? Imagine if a tool existed to help you achieve that! You're about to learn how this is possible.

My two favorite quotes about time are:
"You have a finite amount of time and an infinite number of choices, choose wisely."

"Your most important resource is your time."
One way to get more time is to learn habits that keep you safe and healthy. Another way is to use a tool that optimizes how you spend your time. So where does my interest in saving time come from?

My first memory of being aware of time was on my eighth birthday. I was asked to make a wish. I remember wishing I could live forever. I started on my journey to save time right after college. I got fired from my first job due to a mistake I made. Mistakes can get you fired. It was a valuable lesson that helped me throughout my career. Believe it or not, early failures can lead to future successes. It is said that "Every cloud has a silver lining."  The opposite is also true. Early success can lead to failure which was my experience in the stock market during the dot-com bubble.

My second job was at a company called Advanced Computer Techniques (ACT). It was a consulting firm that was developing the first Home Banking system. This was before the internet existed. I had to write weekly status reports on how my time was spent. It included the tasks I worked on, hours spent, and what I accomplished. This allowed us to bill the client. It's also a good management tool as it does prevent employees from goofing off.

I hated doing the status report because I couldn't remember what I did, how long it took, and what issues I ran into. I would write notes in a planner but it wasn't complete.

I had an idea to make this less of a problem. If I could enter text and have the date and time automatically included, I could figure out what I did. I developed a computer script that would log the date and time and some text of what I did. This allowed me to see what I worked on at the end of the week. I found this helpful. I loved the fact that it automatically added the date and time to what I did. It was the start of many different versions I would create over the years.

I found using productivity tools very enjoyable. For any task that takes five steps, I want to do it in four. I get a satisfying feeling when I can save time. On the other hand, if a system wastes my time it drives me crazy.
An example is any system that you have to click a menu, then a sub-menu then a sub-sub-menu. Then you have to click a button to perform the task. I've enjoyed anytime I could automate and speed up this type of process which I did with the software I called Logger. I started using a tool called Auto Hot Key which I use with to extend its functionality.

Another example was when I was trading stocks in the late 90s, I would create web-pages with lists of links. The list's title would be something like the Top 6 Investing Websites. When I added a new item to the list I had to modify the title and change the 6 to a 7. I hated doing this and wrote code to automatically count the number of items in a list. I never have to worry that the count is different than the number of items any longer.

What is ?

It's a website that helps you create time by tracking how you're spending it. You'll get more done in less time, and reach your goals using the system. I like to call this Super Productivity. Tracking your time is very useful if you have to report or bill for it. But it's also useful if you want to improve inefficiencies in how you work.

It will help you determine:
  • how to be more efficient
  • Where you're being delayed?
  • What's causing your problems and fixing the root cause?
  • What unexpected issues are coming up
  • What can you do to make these tasks easier?
How does work?

Every 15 minutes you're  notified to enter what you've worked on. You're prompted by sound, color, and a pop up window.

Enter what you did and press the Save button. The system will save your entry. At any time you can ask questions on how you spent your time. For example, how much time did I spend in meetings? How much time on project X? The results you get are only as good as the data you enter, because of garbage in means garbage out. You can include a project name, client name, part of the development cycle, whether wasteful. You'll be entering free-form text so it's important to set up some standards to make it easier to query.

To see where your time went, you click a link on the bottom that says, Today or Yesterday. This will give you a report on what you did on those days.

The system sounds 3 different types of alarms
  • at zero minutes of each hour during working hours it reminds you to check your emails. This is because I got into trouble at work. Someone complained to my boss that I didn't get back to them soon enough so my boss asked that I check my emails each hour.
  • at 45 minutes of each hour you're reminded to take a break
  • at 15, 30 and on the hour it gives you some random wisdom. These will be customizable in future releases probably for paid versions.
  • You can also turn off the alarms.

One important thing to do is daily, weekly and monthly post-mortems. The daily ones will help you make sure what you're tracking is clear and useful. It can also help you put things onto your to-do list that aren't currently there.

What's the benefit of tracking your time?
  • You can track your accomplishments to make it easier to do an employment self-review
  • You can better track how much to bill clients
  • You can better balance your time if you know where you're spending it
  • You can get more done in less time by knowing where your time is going
The system will support Smart Task Selection (STS) where it will help you select the proper task to work on to reach your goals>
  • If you're an employer you can get productivity gains which could save you from hiring additional staff

In Conclusion

To give a try go to the website and sign-up for free, then just start tracking your time and enjoy the benefits.
