Puck Protection

Puck protection is keeping your body between the defense and the puck. This is similar to dribbling a basketball on your side or with your back facing the player.

First demonstrate puck protection. This description assumes your right handed. First demonstrate not protecting the puck, how easy it is for the defense to take it away.  Then have a player or the other coach stand on your left side. Hold the puck to your right. Show how it's almost impossible to take the puck away. Then demonstrate puck protection with your back to the other player.

Pair off your kids in groups of two. One player controls the puck and the other has to attempt to take it away.  If the defense takes it away then the players switch.

The key is to move puck opposite to where defense is coming from.
