Preface

I’ve been in the job market for 33 years. Since my first job as a paper boy to my current job as a software developer for a small hedge fund, I've enjoyed working but I've hated looking for jobs.

I’ve done many things, including writing software programs, being on the radio but I’ve never felt secure in a job.  This happened from my first job out of college where I heard those dreaded words “You’re Fired.”

I’ve worked at a number of jobs in my life and know that I’ve learned a lot from each experience.  I’ve been laid-off from x jobs and decided to do something about it.  This book is the result of those 33 years of working, being liked in some places and disliked in others.

During one of my out of work periods, I tried to start a number of businesses but ran into two problems.  One was I wasn't focused enough and the other was my wife wanted me to get a job.  There was one thing many people said to me about the software business and business in general.  It was that Marketing and Sales are very important skills.  Maybe even more important than the software itself.  I thought about it and realized that most things in life are about marketing and sales.  I know I hated to sell myself as I'm a rather shy person.  But, if I ever wanted to be successful, I’d have to overcome this.

This book is my adventure in the work force.
