What is the immune system (g)

The immune system is a combination of structures and processes of the body to protect against disease. It must be able to stop invaders and distinguish them from healthy tissue. There are 2 types of immune systems. One that you're born with and one that adapts.
1. innate immune system
2. adaptive immune system.

Both subsystems use body fluids and cells as a line of defense.

The immune system protects against:
  • pathogens - something that produces disease, ex. germ.
  • viruses - small agent that makes you sick.
  • parasitic worms

  • antigen
  • virus

We can become immune to germs. Adaptive immunity creates memory after an initial response to a pathogen, leading to an enhanced response to subsequent encounters with that same germ. This is the basis of vaccination.

If your immune system is malfunctioning it can result in:
  • autoimmune diseases
  • inflammatory diseases
  • cancer

  • genetic disease
  • acquire by - HIV/AIDS
  • Use of  immunosuppressive medication

Autoimmune diseases occur from overactive immune system attacking normal tissues. Some examples are:
  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • type 1 diabetes
  • lupus
